Conference Corner Harri Lidsle, Host, ITEC 2001
ITEC 2001: Greetings from Finland!
ITEC 2001 Lahti is closer and closer, low that ITEC Regina is over it’s Ftime for us to tell you of our plans. At first I should tell you that our conference venue, Sibelius Hall, is ready. We had the opening concert on March 9, 2000, and we are very proud of the building. There have been a lot of positive comments about the hall in newspapers all over Europe. The greatest compliments have been in the German Die Zeit, Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung, Berlin Zeitung, Swedish Svenska Dagbladet and London Financial Times and Independent, which says that it’s one of , the greatest halls in Northern Europe.
We know that in summer 2001 we will have a great hall for the ITEC concerts. Of course it’s not just a concert hall – it also has a lot of room for teaching, exhibitions and a restaurant which can make food for up to 500 guests to eat at the same time!
The most common questions ate related to the competitions. In our program we have Tuba Artist Solo, Euphonium Artist Solo, Student Tuba Solo, Student Euphonium Solo, Tuba Orchestral, Tuba Quartet and Jazz competitions. The chairmen for the respective competitions are: Jouko Harjanne, Steven Mead, Joe Skillen, Jukka Myllys, Jens Bjoem-Larsen, Kiyoshi Sato and Sam Pilafian. The Tuba Artist competition will be held some days earlier in Lieksa and the rest of the competitions during ITEC in Lahti. The program will be on our web page at www.musicfinland.com/brass/itec 3.6.2000.
Most of our artists haven’t yet been able to confirm their appearance, but we can presently release the following list: Roger Bobo, Patrick Sheridan, Oystein Baadsvik, Shoichiro Hokazono, Roland Szentpali, Scott Kinmont, Steve Rosse, Velvet Brown, James Gourlay, John Griffiths, Dennis AsKew, Harri Miettunen, Sverre Olsrud, Mel Culbertson, Robert Childs & Son and the competition chairmen. Euphoniumists – please don’t be mad! We are still waiting answers from many euphonium artists!
And lastly, we now have TERRY LEAHY in our organization. I am sure all of you who were in Minneapolis or in Sydney can remember this person helping you all the time with smile in his face. He recently took a position in the Finnish National Opera and will be helping us in ITEC Lahti. YES!! Along with him we have German, Hungarian, Spanish, French and English speaking persons to serve you with your home language! We look forward to seeing YOU in Lahti!
