Eligibility

All competitors must be ITEA members at the time of the live rounds (semifinals and finals) of the competition. Finalists and semi-finalists must be registered and present at ITEC. The competitors must never have held a full-time professional position as a musician on any instrument. Ensembles must be comprised of 3-6 members. A minimum of two members must play tuba or euphonium. Each member of the ensemble must perform on all pieces during the competition.

The jury is looking for excellent performances of high musical and technical standards.

Rules

Finalists and semi-finalists must be registered and present at ITEC 2023 to be held Monday, May 29 – June 3, 2023 at the Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona, USA.
All competitors will pay a reduced registration fee for ITEC.

Prizes

Prize amounts will be announced in early 2023.

Rounds and repertoire

1 Recorded preliminary round
Required repertoire:
  • Prepare at least 6 but not more than 10 minutes of music. Include the following: one arrangement of a renaissance, baroque, classical, or romantic work, partial or complete AND one original work composed for the instrumentation of the group* (see below for exceptions).
2 Second round
Required repertoire:
  • Prepare at least 6 but not more than 10 minutes of music. Include the following: one arrangement of a renaissance, baroque, classical, or romantic work, partial or complete AND one original work composed for the instrumentation of the group* (see below for exceptions).
3 Final round
*With regard to “original works composed for the instrumentation of the group,” euphonium may be freely substituted for trombone (or vice versa) without consulting the competition coordinator. Any other substitutions must be approved in writing by the competition coordinator. Email substitution requests to iteacompetitions@gmail.com and include a .pdf of the score for evaluation as well as any other supporting documentation justifying the substitution. If approved, a digital or printed record of this correspondence must be included with entry materials.
Required repertoire:
  • Choose up to 15 minutes of music. A maximum of one piece may be repeated from a previous round, and a minimum of one piece must be an original work composed for the instrumentation of the group*. The finals will take place in front of an audience.
